Freedom 0.8.8: an agent that builds the decentralized web

Freedom Agent: an assistant in the browser that builds, publishes and names decentralized sites from one prompt.

Freedom Agent built, published and named this site from one prompt

Freedom 0.8.8 brings an agent into the browser.

Freedom Agent researches, reads pages and steers the browser for you. It also builds complete sites on the decentralized web: from one prompt and a few confirmations, it writes the site, publishes it to Swarm and registers a domain name for it.

Freedom Agent

It operates the browser: pages, tabs, uploads and downloads, and the tools sites offer to agents.

It builds: it writes and runs code in a sandbox and publishes the result to Swarm.

It names what it builds: it registers and renews
.eth
,
.wei
and
.gwei
names.

It runs the nodes: it starts and stops Swarm, IPFS, Radicle, Tor and Myotis as a task needs them.

It pays: it sends funds from your wallet.

Anything that spends money or publishes waits for your approval. You can also dictate to it, on your own machine if you like.

You pick the model: a local one through Ollama, or NEAR AI, Venice, OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Meta and others. Requests go straight to your provider, never through a Freedom server, and each chat lists where its requests went. The agent is off by default; turn it on under Settings > AI.

An agent in the browser, not beside it

Most AI tools for the web take one of two shapes. Browser extensions send the page you are on to a model their maker picked. Hosted AI app studios build your site and keep it on their servers, under your account with them. Either way, a company sits between you and what you made.

Freedom Agent lives in a browser that already runs the nodes, holds the wallet and carries your identity. What it builds is published from your own Swarm node, paid from your own wallet and named with a domain you own. No builder account, no studio hosting. The site stays up as long as its storage is paid for, not as long as a company keeps your account open.

That is the idea: an AI that helps you publish on the decentralized web instead of keeping you on a platform. Go full yolo if you like, but read the confirmation prompts. They keep the keys yours.

Everything else

More than 130 merged pull requests went into 0.8.8, most of them stability, bug and security fixes. Among them:

Open without gateway: pages behind eth.limo, eth.link and bzz.link can open straight from Swarm and IPFS, one click from the address bar or by default.

Everyday browsing: a History menu with recently closed pages,
Cmd+1
to
Cmd+9
to switch tabs (
Ctrl
on Windows and Linux), and a full screen without toolbars.

Fixes: Tor connects on Windows, Ethereum transactions no longer get stuck, and the Swarm node no longer eats gigabytes of memory.

Security: websites no longer see Freedom's name and version, a site in a background tab can't act as the one you are looking at, and the Swarm and IPFS nodes hold up against malicious peers.

Under the hood: Chromium 156 and updated Swarm, IPFS and Myotis nodes.

The changelog has the rest.

Freedom 0.8.7: Swarm browsing credit and a pop-up blocker

Swarm browsing credit, a pop-up blocker, simpler publishing payments and a large round of fixes.

Freedom 0.8.7 adds browsing credit for the Swarm node so you can pay peers for faster downloads and for uploads, a pop-up blocker, and a simpler one-payment publishing flow on Swarm. Settings are regrouped to match Chrome's order, and a large set of freezes, platform and security fixes lands with it.

New

Browsing credit for the Swarm node: pay peers for faster downloads and for uploads

In the wallet's Nodes tab, with credit left and recent spend

Top up in xDAI, or switch paying peers off

Swarm cache size and Clear cache under Settings > Nodes

Pop-up blocker: one new tab per click or key press, with an address-bar icon to open a blocked pop-up or allow the site

Update progress in the browser menu and under Settings > About Freedom

Myotis warns when a network upgrade needs a newer Freedom

Improved

Publishing on Swarm takes one xDAI payment to your node:

Plans and upgrades priced in xDAI, paid from any wallet

New storage is immutable: once full, it takes no more uploads

Settings regrouped into ten sections, in Chrome's order (Ad Blocking and Site Permissions under Privacy and security; Chains, RPC Providers and Name Resolution under Networks; Experimental renamed Advanced)

Network sources named in plain words, with the technical name under Advanced

The first profile can be deleted once another profile exists

The Swarm node reads chain data through Freedom's chain sources instead of a single RPC

Video and other large files on Swarm start playing sooner

Removed

Ankr from the default Ethereum and Gnosis Chain RPCs, as it now requires an API key

Fixed

Fewer stalls that freeze every window (proof checks,
web3://
apps, Radicle files, browsing history, ad blocking, the IPFS node, Swarm messaging, profiles and Bee-era upgrades)

Sending a transaction no longer closes the browser while it confirms

Links such as
magnet:
and
mailto:
offer to open their app

YouTube video ads are blocked when ad blocking is on

A page that closes itself closes its tab

A local
file://
page can be bookmarked

Remapped shortcuts no longer fire twice on German and other non-US keyboards

The Windows tab strip no longer starts behind an empty gap

A private window's address bar, find bar and bookmark fields stay readable in the light theme

Tor, Radicle, Ant and Myotis start on Windows 11 without the Visual C++ Redistributable

The Linux AppImage starts on Ubuntu 24.04 without
libfuse2
, and is 18 MB smaller

On Wayland, Freedom's windows group under its launcher icon

Tor starts on Macs without Homebrew's xz

Offchain ENS names with a
.onion
gateway resolve over Tor; names with an offchain answer near the 4 MB limit keep resolving

A log query matching too many logs fails with an error instead of a shortened answer

The Nodes menu shows peers and bandwidth again for an external IPFS node

Myotis answers verified reads within seconds of a cold start or recovery, keeps retrying through brief checkpoint outages, and no longer stays stuck after Freedom quits unexpectedly

Myotis gas estimates use every transaction field; a refused transaction shows as not sent

A
bzz://
address of raw data loads; one whose data isn't on Swarm fails sooner

Swarm video no longer cuts off when loaded right after the node starts

Swarm content loads within about half a minute of waking from sleep, not 15 minutes

Large Swarm uploads no longer drop thousands of peer connections

The Swarm node no longer dials peers' private network addresses

Security

Web pages can no longer use your Swarm node's local API (which could spend its funds); dApps using
localhost:1633
must switch to
window.swarm

bzz://
pages can't upload or control the node

The wallet signs only the exact transaction or message you approved; Touch ID keeps the vault password out of the browser window

A hijacked page can't reach wallet, identity, permission or publishing functions

Site-supplied titles, filenames and payment details show only as text on internal pages

Packaged builds ignore debugging flags and load only their own app code

Sites can't open network shares, directory servers or system settings panes

A site gets a TLS client certificate only if you pick one, never in a private window

macOS builds drop two code-signing exceptions

A permission prompt can be answered only from its own window

External Swarm and IPFS nodes can't set cookies on the pages they serve

Bundled nodes updated (Ant 0.5.45 to 0.5.61, Arti 2.6.0 to 2.7.0, freedom-ipfs 0.4.3 to 0.4.5, libradicle 0.7.1 to 0.8.0, Myotis 0.1.11 to 0.1.14); Electron 44.4.5 to 44.7.0

External IPFS nodes, ENSv2 readiness, settings search and Arch packages.

Freedom 0.8.6 lets you point at an external IPFS node, prepares for ENSv2, adds search in Settings, ships Arch
.pacman
packages, and stops sites from hammering permission prompts.

New

External IPFS node support (thanks @ivanmmurciaua):

Under Settings > Nodes

Your own gateway, or one detected on the standard local port

Myotis keeps syncing after its built-in checkpoint expires:

A replacement needs agreeing independent sources and a local proof check

Progress, errors and Retry sync in the Nodes menu

ENSv2 readiness:

DNS names such as
gregskril.com
as wallet recipients

Offchain names with every Name Resolution method

Per-chain addresses on chains other than Ethereum

Settings search: a field in the Settings sidebar that finds a setting by its label or description; Enter or a click opens the matching row

Limit on repeated permission prompts: three dismissals in a row block the site for the session, as in Chrome; shown in the address-bar indicator, where Remove lifts it

Arch Linux
.pacman
packages for x64 and arm64, next to the AppImage and deb, with in-app updates (thanks @jwahdatehagh)

Improved

Myotis re-syncs from scratch once after updating to this release

Fixed

Opening a Chrome Web Store page no longer crashes Freedom

Quitting with the IPFS node running no longer crashes Freedom

Camera and microphone work on macOS, and on sites like Google Meet that check before asking

Visiting a site no longer fetches its page a second time, without your cookies, to find its icon

Ctrl+W
on Windows and Linux closes the active tab instead of the whole window

Removing a permission from the address-bar indicator no longer clears another window's session decisions

Trust, permission and Radicle popovers close with the address-bar suggestions instead of staying over the page

The Nodes menu no longer shows a Tor version while Tor is off

A Swarm folder address without its trailing slash, or with a colon in its name, opens the folder

A Settings address naming a missing section changes to the section shown; a link to a single chain opens that chain or says it is no longer configured

Small plain-text files on IPFS open in the tab instead of downloading

Myotis catches up on a fresh install instead of stalling, most often on Gnosis

A transient Gnosis RPC error no longer makes the Swarm node lose a paid postage batch or deploy a second chequebook

Security

Back and Forward re-check an ENS name's verification instead of restoring the verdict from the first visit

Offchain ENS lookups reach only public HTTPS gateways, within time and size limits

Bundled Ant 0.5.44 to 0.5.45 and Myotis 0.1.7 to 0.1.11; Electron 44.3.0 to 44.4.5 and other runtime dependencies refreshed

Freedom 0.8.5: the daily-driver release

The first release you can use as your only browser, now with Ethereum and Tor nodes.

Freedom 0.8.5 — now coming with Ethereum and Tor nodes

Freedom 0.8.5 is the first release you can use as your only browser.

When we introduced Freedom in January it was read-only and narrow by design: a way to reach Swarm and IPFS content directly, without gateways. It has since learned to publish, it has a wallet and an identity, and its code has been public since February. What it lacked was everything else a browser has to do all day. 0.8.5 adds that.

What a daily driver changes

A decentralized browser that you open only for
bzz://
links is a tool. A browser you keep open all day, that happens to speak Swarm, IPFS, Radicle, Ethereum and Tor natively, is something else: it puts the decentralized web on the same footing as the rest of the web, one address bar for both.

That is the point of Freedom, and it is why we care about the word freedom in a few specific senses:

Freedom to read. Content from Swarm and IPFS arrives from peers, not through anyone's gateway.
.onion
addresses go through Tor. ENS and
.tez
names resolve from the chain. No operator sits between you and what you asked for.

Freedom to publish. Swarm, IPFS and now Radicle repositories are writable from the browser. What you put there stays reachable as long as the network holds it, not as long as a company does.

Freedom to own. Keys live with you: in the browser's vault, on a Ledger, on your phone, or in a Safe shared with people you choose. Payments and signatures happen without an account at a service.

Freedom to verify. An app hosted in a contract shows you the chain, the block and the hash it was read from. A light client can prove that read against a chain head it synced itself.

Freedom from being watched. Ad and tracker blocking is on by default. Private windows keep nothing. Sites ask before they use your camera, microphone or location.

None of this is new to 0.8.5 in principle. What is new is that you no longer have to give up a normal browser to have it.

The everyday parts

Chrome's behaviour was the bar. These are meant to work the way you already expect, so this is a list, not a tour:

Ad and tracker blocking, on by default, with a per-site allowlist. Filter lists update over Swarm.

Find in page.

A download manager, for web downloads and for
bzz://
and
ipfs://
content alike.

Per-site permission prompts for camera, microphone, notifications, clipboard, location and MIDI.

Private windows, with no wallet and no dApp providers inside them.

Remappable keyboard shortcuts, and page zoom (thanks @alexwbend).

Web search from the address bar and from a selection.

Tab audio indicator and mute, background-tab clicks, a tab strip that scrolls, menus that scroll.

If any of these behave differently from Chrome, that is a bug, and we would like to hear about it.

The decentralized parts

Apps hosted in a contract.
web3://<address>/
renders what the contract returns. A shield in the address bar reports chain, block, contract and content hash, and whether the read was verified.

Radicle repositories in the browser. Open a
rad:
URL, browse at any commit, file issues and patches. Radicle now runs embedded, with no separate processes and no local port.

Myotis. An experimental peer-to-peer light client for Ethereum and Gnosis by @biafra23, off by default. Reads are proven against a chain head it syncs from peers.

Three new account types. Ledger, phone accounts over Open Lavatory, and Safe multi-owner accounts on Gnosis. All work with the vault locked, for dApp signing and sends; Ledger and phone accounts also pay x402 requests.

Tor for
.onion
. A bundled Arti client, off by default, in every macOS, Linux and Windows build. Clearnet traffic never touches it.

.tez
names, encrypted messaging for Swarm apps, and app manifests that turn a series of permission prompts into one decision.

Under the hood

Electron 44 with Chromium 152. Installers about 15 MB smaller. Ant 0.5.44 as the bundled Swarm node. Three security fixes, two dozen smaller fixes, and a screenshot-based UI check that now runs on every pull request touching the interface. The changelog has all of it.

Try it

Download 0.8.5 for macOS, Linux and Windows from freedom.baby. The code is on GitHub and Radicle.

If you have been waiting for Freedom to be usable as your main browser, this is the release to try. Report what breaks at t.me/freedom_browser.

In-house Ant and freedom-ipfs nodes replace Bee and Kubo, plus multiple profiles.

Freedom 0.8.0 swaps the bundled Swarm and IPFS nodes for in-house Rust implementations built with mobile in mind, and lets you run multiple profiles side by side.

New

In-house Rust implementations of the bundled Swarm and IPFS nodes, built for the upcoming mobile apps (smaller binaries, bounded memory, and room for specialised node features on every platform)

Ant 0.5.33, a lean Swarm light node, replaces bundled Bee:

Full Bee parity: retrieval, feeds, stamp purchase, publishing and chequebook payments

Instant publishing setup (no lengthy Gnosis chain-state download)

Node data and Swarm identity migrate in place on first launch

freedom-ipfs 0.4.3, a retrieval-only IPFS implementation, replaces bundled Kubo:

The node runs inside the browser process instead of as a separate daemon

No standing peer connections; it connects when IPFS content loads

IPFS load progress in the status bar (Settings > Experimental)

Multiple profiles with separate tabs, history, settings, wallet, identities and nodes, running side by side in separate windows:

Profiles flyout in the browser menu, a native Profiles menu and a
freedom://profiles
manager page

Existing data carries over as the first profile on upgrade

Prompt to adopt system Swarm or Radicle nodes found on their default ports as external nodes

.wei
and
.gwei
name resolution alongside ENS, for navigation and wallet recipients

"Tabs in title bar" setting on Linux, off by default (thanks @agazso)

Improved

Freedom-managed nodes use dedicated ports (Ant 11633, Radicle 18780), leaving the ecosystem defaults (1633, 8780) to system nodes

Internal
freedom://
pages (History, Settings, Profiles) open as singleton tabs, focusing the existing tab instead of duplicating it

Removed

Local Kubo API and gateway ports (5001, 8080); the embedded IPFS node exposes no local endpoints

Fixed

Opening an
ipfs://
or
ipns://
page with the IPFS node stopped shows a friendly error page instead of raw JSON

Swarm publishing setup: Swap xDAI to xBZZ opens the swap flow again instead of the wallet receive screen

ENS resolution falls back to the public-RPC quorum during Colibri prover or network outages

Radicle peer discovery follows the community seeds' move to radicle.network

The Linux taskbar and dock show the Freedom icon instead of a generic placeholder

Security

Electron updated from 41.7.1 to 43.0.0 (Chromium 150, Node 24.17); other runtime and build dependencies refreshed

Freedom 0.7.4 lets you pay as you browse with native x402 support from the built-in wallet, and adds Swarm publisher identities so you can choose which identity signs what you publish.

New

Native x402 payment support: pay as you browse, straight from the built-in wallet:

Cryptographic ENS verification via Colibri and a unified network registry.

Freedom 0.7.2 switches default ENS resolution to cryptographic verification with Colibri, and gathers chains, RPC endpoints and providers into one network registry.

New

Cryptographic ENS verification via Colibri as the new default resolution path:

Forward and reverse lookups verified locally rather than trusted across public RPCs

The address-bar shield popover distinguishes Colibri verification from quorum verification

A verification mark next to cryptographically verified recipient names on the wallet send review screen

A warning when a recipient address claims an ENS name that doesn't forward-verify

Reload on an ENS page re-runs verification under the current method (hard reload also bypasses the 15-minute cache)

Settings > ENS Resolution: choose between Colibri, the public-RPC quorum, or your own RPC

Unified network registry as the single source for chains, RPC endpoints, prover endpoints and keyed RPC providers:

Settings > Chains: per-chain endpoint list across your RPCs, commercial keyed providers and public RPCs

Add a chain via the chainlist.org catalogue or by hand

Settings > RPC Providers: manage Alchemy / Infura / DRPC API keys

Destination URL preview on link hover, shown in the bottom-left like Chrome and Firefox

Improved

Default ENS resolution changed from public-RPC quorum to Colibri (custom-RPC users keep their direct-RPC-first path)

Wallet, ENS and the Bee node manager all read chains and RPC endpoints from the unified network registry

Fixed

Address-bar copy and paste work as expected on all platforms

Security

Swarm dApp provider permission prompts key on the committed page URL, not on the address-bar draft

Electron updated from 41.5.0 to 41.7.0; Radicle from 1.8.0 to 1.9.1; other runtime dependencies refreshed

ENS verified across public RPCs, and native bzz://, ipfs:// and ipns:// schemes.

Freedom 0.7.1 makes ENS resolution check several public RPCs before you navigate, and moves Swarm and IPFS onto native
bzz://
,
ipfs://
and
ipns://
schemes.

New

ENS resolution verified across multiple public RPCs:

A verification shield in the address bar; clicking it opens a popover with the full resolved URI and per-provider answers

An interstitial confirmation page when a resolution can't reach quorum, gated by "Block unverified ENS navigation" (on by default)

A "Cross-RPC verification" section in Settings exposing quorum parameters and toggles

An editable list of public Ethereum RPC providers in Settings

Improved

Swarm, IPFS and IPNS pages load under custom
bzz://
,
ipfs://
and
ipns://
standard schemes:

Origin is the scheme itself (
bzz://<hash>/
,
ipfs://<cid>/
,
ipns://<name>/
)

Sub-resources proxy through a main-process handler with retries

ENS-backed sites use the human-readable name as host, so storage origin stays stable across contenthash updates

CIDv0 / base58btc inputs canonicalise to CIDv1 base32 / libp2p-key base36, so Chromium's lowercase host parsing no longer corrupts mixed-case encodings

ENS names display under their resolved transport, with stricter scheme rules (mismatched transport schemes show an error; in-page ENS links must carry a scheme)

Speculative gateway prefetch during ENS quorum waves for faster first paint on cold-cache lookups

Fixed

Bee's raw 404 JSON is suppressed during cold-content Swarm lookups; the spinner keeps running, and timeouts show the "Content not ready yet" page

IPFS / IPNS loads on macOS no longer fail with "kubo gateway unreachable"

Security

Electron updated from 41.2.1 to 41.5.0 (latest Chromium 146 and Node 24 patches)

Bundled nodes updated: Kubo 0.40.1 to 0.41.0;
@ethersphere/bee-js
11.1.1 to 12.1.0

Freedom 0.6.0: Introducing Freedom

The first public preview: a minimalist browser that loads Swarm and IPFS content straight from peers.

Freedom 0.6.0 — connected to Swarm and IPFS

Today we’re sharing the first public preview of Freedom, a minimalist browser built specifically for the decentralized web.

Freedom is designed for Swarm and IPFS. It allows you to enter hashes, CIDs, or ENS names directly into the address bar and loads content by connecting straight to peers. There are no centralized gateways involved in content delivery.

Instead of routing requests through third-party infrastructure, Freedom runs local Swarm and IPFS nodes and participates in the networks itself. When you use it, you are not just accessing decentralized content — you are actively contributing to the health and resilience of the network.

Why Freedom exists

Despite years of progress, much of today’s “decentralized” browsing still depends on centralized gateways. These gateways are convenient, but they quietly reintroduce points of control, failure, and observation.

Freedom takes a different approach.

It treats decentralized networks as first-class systems rather than fallbacks. Swarm and IPFS are not accessed through the web — they are accessed directly. The browser behaves less like a client of a service and more like a piece of network infrastructure.

This has a few important consequences:

No single operator sits between you and the content

Availability improves as more users participate

The network grows stronger through use, not abstraction

ENS resolution today cannot yet be fully trustless without running a full Ethereum node. Freedom treats this as a temporary limitation and tracks progress in decentralized smart-contract validation and verification closely.

Freedom is intentionally minimal. It does not try to replace your everyday browser or reinvent the web. Its focus is narrow by design: making decentralized content usable without compromise.

About this release

This is a preview release.

It is stable enough to explore and use, but it is not yet a complete browser. The work so far has focused on correctness, simplicity, and direct network access rather than feature breadth.

At this stage, Freedom is intentionally read-only. It allows you to browse decentralized content, but not yet to publish or upload it.

The codebase is not open source yet. Before opening it up, the next step is a round of auditing and cleanup to ensure that what is released publicly is easy to understand, build on, and maintain. Open sourcing Freedom is a priority and will follow shortly.

Freedom already behaves like a full browser — tabs, navigation, history, and bookmarks work as expected — but the emphasis so far has been on decentralized access rather than completeness.

What comes next

Freedom is designed around a longer-term goal: read, write, own.

Browsing decentralized content is only the first step. The next phase will add publishing and upload functionality, allowing users not just to consume content, but to actively participate in decentralized networks.

Beyond that, Freedom will integrate wallet and cryptographic identity functionality. The aim is to make ownership — of content, identity, and presence — a native part of the browsing experience, rather than an external extension or afterthought.

Freedom is built to be network-agnostic by design. While the current focus is on Swarm and IPFS, other decentralized storage and replication systems are being evaluated. Some networks, such as Arweave or Hypercore-based systems, raise different trade-offs around verification, resource usage, and trust assumptions. Support for additional networks will depend on whether they can be integrated without undermining the principles of local operation and minimized trust.

As with the current release, progress will be deliberate. Features will be added only where they strengthen the core idea, not where they dilute it.

Getting involved

Development is happening in the open, and feedback from early users matters.

If you’d like to follow development, discuss design and technical decisions, or share feedback with other early users, there is a small Telegram group at:

https://t.me/freedom_browser

To try Freedom yourself, download the preview release from the website:

https://freedombrowser.eth.limo

Freedom is an experiment in taking decentralized networks seriously — not as an add-on to the web, but as a foundation.

If that idea resonates, you’re exactly who this browser is for.
